Stay Safe, Stay Warm, and Stay Tooned! New “Drawing Funny” Episode and MSCA “Winter” Zine Available

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten to get out of the house and visit together at Garibaldi’s Pizza for our monthly dinner meet-ups. It was always one of my reasons to get out of the house, even if my wife had to push me out the door when I didn’t feel like being social. I always felt better once I sat down and started talking toons with my fellow MSCA members. Hopefully we’ll be able to resume our group dinners and drawing nights sometime in 2021, but until it’s safe to get together in person we’ll continue to do our monthly MSCA zoom calls on the first Tuesday of each month.

Available online now is the Drawing Funny Podcast, Episode 10 – “Procrastination”. It’s the Mid-South Cartoonists Association’s December Monthly Zoom Meeting– well, most of it. We talked toons, discussed what’s happening around the M-town, swapped ideas on self-promotion/increasing eyes on our artwork, and how to make money with it and commissions during a time with no (or few) in person conventions.

We also discussed a couple of our favorite art books.

This monthly video call happened back on December 1st, and honestly with everything that’s been keeping me busy since this one was recorded it now qualifies as a “Flashback Friday” episode..! This one turned out to be a long episode and clocked in at just under 1hr 55min. As usual it was weird to not go hang out in the Garibaldi’s parking lot and talk for another hour or two like we tend to do in person.

You can find website and social media links for many of our MSCA members on the group’s Members Directory page, and the “Winter” zine issue is now available for purchase in local Memphis area comic shops.

901 Comics (Cooper/Young) – 901comicsmemphis.com

The Cellar Table Top Games & Comics (Bartlett Blvd.) – comiccellaronline.com

Comics & Collectibles (Poplar Ave.) – memphiscomics.com/wps

Next issue will be “Memphis” themed, and there is no buy in costs for members to participate. If you’re not on our MSCA mailing list contact El Prez Kevin L. Williams and he’ll make sure you get all the upcoming club info.

Happy Holidays– stay safe, stay warm, and stay tooned!

“Is this thing on..?” New MSCA ‘Drawing Funny’ Podcast Is Live And New ‘Magic’ Zine Is In Stores

Hey, gang- as of this month I am a podperson again!

It took a little doing, but the new MSCA podcast Drawing Funny is now available online and I’ve got 3 (and a half) episodes in the can.

Episode 0 is the pilot/introductory episode, Episode 1 was our last meeting Zoom call…

Episode 2 was an interview with the MSCA President, Kevin L. Williams, and Episode 3 was with local Memphis comic creator Matt Bowers.

I’ll be recording more episodes soon. As soon as it is safe enough for us to get together again in person I’ll be taking the show on the road to our dinner meet-ups, to comics shops, conventions, and other events to record.

Please be sure to “like” and subscribe to this podcast on iTunesSpotifyBreakerGoogle PodcastsRadio PublicPocket Casts, and other places you can get podcasts.

You can also follow this show or contact us on social media:

I’ll be recording our next monthly Zoom meeting, which is next Tuesday, November 3rd.  If you’d like to attend the virtual MSCA meeting please contact Kevin– midsouthcartoonists (at) gmail (dot) com, and be sure to put “zoom invite request” in the subject line.

Lots to discuss this month, including the latest issues of the MSCA Zine. Issue #3 “Magic” is in stores now, and #4 “Animals” (with a Jim Palmer cover) will be out in mid-November. Copies of issue #1 “Horror” and #2 “Space” are still available at Comics & Collectibles, The Cellar, and 901 Comics. Deadline for entries for the “Winter/Holiday” #5 issue is coming up soon, so be sure to get your art sent over to our editors Dale Martin and Jason Negan.

Speaking of 901 Comics, you can pick up Matt Bowers’ Memphis comic there. Issues #1 & #2 are available for sale there now. He had a singing at the shop last weekend. Matt was also featured in the October 22, 2020 issue of the Memphis Flyer.

BTW- if you missed the last MSCA Zoom Meeting, you can listen to it on DrawingFunny.com (Ep1 – “Calling All Cartoonists”)and hear some MSCA history by the man responsible for us all being drawn together- founding member Jack Cassady. I’m hoping to edit some of the video together to use for our new YouTube channel Kevin is putting together. We will be uploading some drawing/painting videos to it soon. Would love to see some of your work on there, as well as in the MSCA website’s Members Gallery I’m currently curating, too.

Kevin and Muley have been very active over on YouTube with their “Muley Reads” videos, where just like the title suggests, Muley reads some fun, entertaining, and educational books. Fond out more info over at MuleyTheMule.com.

Stay tooned!

“Hey- Where Is Everybody..?”

Hey, gang- Lin, you’re friendly neighborhood cartoonist and assistant webmaster here. Wanted to introduce you to the new MSCA website and am gonna try and get you caught up with what’s going on with the group these days…

So, as you may remember the MSCA started out 2020 with a lot of momentum. We were having our monthly dinner meet-ups at Garibaldi’s Pizza near the U of M on the first Tuesday of each month, and our MSCA Drawing Nights at Michaels in Olive Branch, MS on the second Tuesday of the month. I was enjoying drawing at The Cellar comic shop each Wednesday night, and occasionally getting together with members at other events, or to just hang out.

We had also produced two issues of the new MSCA Zine, The Good, The Bad, And The Sketchy which were for sale at local comic shops around town. Then a few months later that all came to a screeching halt because of the pandemic- no meetings, no drawing together, and no open comic shops.

Well, things are slowly starting to happen again for this group. One is this new website. It’s still under construction, but more and more of it will be unveiled this month as the content becomes available. We’re working on a members page, comics gallery, helpful links, and more. Thanks to my wife Nicki Workman for helping me bring the MSCA website back online.

The MSCA Zines are still alive and being produced. We actually have enough art in the can for issues #3 (magic themed) and #4 (animals). Luckily our jam piece for issue 3 had already been drawn at the last dinner meeting we had, and we could each submit our art through emails. Thanks to Dale Martin and Jason Negen for spearheading this printy project.

Both of the next two issues are at the printer and we should have them back in hand for assembly and in stores soon. Issue #5 (winter themed) is currently being drawn together. You can still purchase copies of the first two issues (#1 horror, #2 space) at Comics & Collectibles on Poplar Ave. near Colonial, 901 Comics in the Cooper/Young area, and at The Cellar on Bartlett Blvd. near Stage.

Speaking of The Cellar, you can find hand drawn sketchcovers by me, Charles Ettinger, and Lonnie Easterling for sale- as well as several of my sketchcards. Proceeds go to support our comics and art habits- neither of which are cheap these days.

We’re planning to gather again (virtually) on the first Tuesday of the month, which happens to be this Tuesday- October 6, 2020, at 7pm.  You won’t have to have a Zoom account to join- but you will need the link, ID, and passcode to participate. Just contact MSCA president Kevin L. Williams to get the Zoom invite and login info. He can also add you to our mailing list if you’d like. You can email Kev at midsouthcartoonists(at)gmail(dot)com.

We had a lot of fun on our first MSCA Zoom call this summer. It was great to see everyone’s faces and talk toons with each other again. Hope you can join us for this next meeting. BTW, FYI it’s BYOP (bring your own pizza).

Speaking of takin’ toons, I’m currently in the process of creating a new MSCA podcast- Drawing Funny. I’m still learning how to record, edit, upload, and distribute a podcast, but I’m slowly becoming a pod-person. I’ve been on a few podcasts over the years, and I listen to several a week, but I have to admit- tech and I aren’t good friends so wish me luck. My plans with this show are to help spotlight some of our MSCA members, our events, learn some tips and tricks, catch up with artists I haven’t talked to in a while, and find out more about folks in the comics industry and fandom who just like to draw funny. I’m also going to try and record our Zoom meetings, and look at doing some video podcasts and time-lapse drawing videos for the new MSCA YouTube channel that Kev is setting up. Will post more soon about it and how members can share their drawing videos, too.

That should catch you up on what’s currently happening with the MSCA. For a group that hasn’t really seen each other in person for over 6 months we are still moving forward- just mostly socially distanced and online right now. I’ll be posting more news here as I get it. Feel free to share any on our Facebook page, or email us at midsouthcartoonists(at)gmail(dot)com. Just be sure to put “news” in the subject line so it will get forwarded to me.

Not sure when we will all see each other again in person, but until then I hope to see you here.

Take care, stay safe, and keep drawing funny!

Lin
