“Cartoonists, ASSEMBLED!” – Our Latest Dinner Gathering And Zine Assembly

This past Tuesday was our MSCA Monthly Dinner Gathering at Garibaldi’s Pizza. We had a great turnout again this month, and lots of help to assmble our latest “The Good, The Bad, The Sketchy” zine’s “Robots” issue.

Some folks coalated the pages and cover, some stapled, and some folded the issue.

I’m glad I remembered to bring my stapler!

Dale Martin was the editor again on this issue and oversaw the MSCA assembly line.

TGTBTS zine cover artist Charlie Forrester was happy with how his cover illustration turned out for issue #9.

Lots more happened during the meeting other than zine assembly…like actually having dinner!

Lots of comic conversations were had.

As was some creating and sharing art. Some by hand, some digitally, and some were printed pieces.

MSCA/NCS member Greg Cravens was happy to play and teach how to play his creator owned “Con Cards” game. He’s added a few new additions to the game, and the game can be played just about anywhere.

You can find Greg and “Con Cards” at most local conventions and events around town or at National Cartoonists Society events around the country.

During the dinner meeting Mid-South Cartoonists Association president Kevin L. Williams shared some upcoming MSCA event news like the next zine, art show, and pop-up shops.

There were lots of freebies to be had. If you have any promo items you’d like to share feel free to add them to our swag table.

Oh, and most fun part of the meet-up was meeting a cat! “I like pizza, too- do you have any take out for me..?”

She was a super sweet and chill Tortoiseshell kitty who was hanging out in front of the restaurant. She was very friendly and even hung out with us while we talked outside after the meeting. Luckily I had some dry catfood and treats in my car that I was able to give her. She was most appreciative and let me pet her and give her some head/chin rubs.

If you’re interested in meeting us at our next dinner meet-up, we meet at Garibaldi’s Pizza on Walker Ave. near the U of M every 1st Tuesday of the month from 6-8pm…or a bit earlier if we’re putting zines together!

Speaking of zines, the official call for entries for our next  The Good, the Bad, and the Sketchy issue has gone out. This one is gonna be an issue without a theme! For those of you who crave a theme, it can be about  everything but the kitchen sink, a kitchen sing, the man with no name, or just “comics about comics”,  since we’d originally planned for it to tie in with our “Funny Pages” show opening in November at Germantown Community Theater.  This will be our 10th issue, and as always, comics and illustration are welcome-  A.I. and fan art of existing properties are NOT, but parody is always welcome.

The Good, the Bad, and the Sketchy is our low-cost contributor-funded venue to collaborate and show off our work in print to members and other customers. Issues are for sale at comic shops around town (maybe you’ve seen them) and by contributors at their own events.

All contributions done for the project belong fully to the creators, and you can publish the same work elsewhere if you wish. Showcasing all-original content/original characters (no fan art, please), it can be a fun venue to try something new, build on an existing project, or preview something you have in the works!

Thanks to everyone who helped put our robots issue together, and thanks to the Garibaldi’s staff for hosting our dinner…and cleaning up after us, especially this week!
