Show Notes: This episode is our 1 year anniversary show, and man what a strange trip and unusual year the first season has been- pandemic, snowpocalypse, layoffs, new job at Area 51, new equipment, learning curves, and lots of comic conversations! For the first episode of our second season I share some MSCA member news, what art projects I’ve been working on recently (RRParks Cards Halloween sketchcards and Grogu/”Baby Yoda” sketchcover), some of the podcasts I listen to, and my thoughts on self-publishing and some of the comics industry publisher news I’ve heard about on the interwebs. Hey, gang-
Well, this last Tuesday was the 1st Tuesday of the month which means it was time for our monthly MSCA meet-up. The weather was amazing- especially for the first week of August in Memphis! Kevin Williams, Greg Cravens, and I (MSCA current prez and former presidents) met up in a shaded area of Overton Park. We had a fun time talkin’ toons and swapping freelance war stories. Tuesday was our monthly MSCA Zoom meeting.
We discussed what all we’d each been working on, what we’ve been watching and reading, plus the status of upcoming meetings.
Speaking of meetings, we’re keeping an eye on local regulations and recommendations from the health department and City of Memphis, plus waiting to hear back when we can reserve the big room at Garibaldi’s Pizza again. We have this announcement from MSCA President, Kevin L. Williams regarding the next two monthly meetings: Continue reading
It’s been a while since we’ve gotten to get out of the house and visit together at Garibaldi’s Pizza for our monthly dinner meet-ups. It was always one of my reasons to get out of the house, even if my wife had to push me out the door when I didn’t feel like being social. I always felt better once I sat down and started talking toons with my fellow MSCA members. Hopefully we’ll be able to resume our group dinners and drawing nights sometime in 2021, but until it’s safe to get together in person we’ll continue to do our monthly MSCA zoom calls on the first Tuesday of each month. Continue reading
Hey, gang- as of this month I am a podperson again!
It took a little doing, but the new MSCA podcast Drawing Funny is now available online and I’ve got 3 (and a half) episodes in the can. Continue reading
MSCA member and Zine publisher Dale Martin and his art can be seen around town this month- virtually.
Dale has two paintings included in the new “Nasty Women Memphis : War Paint!” exhibit. Spring D. Lamb has also contributed artwork to this exhibit and says her work is the positive aspect of racial equality. This third “Nasty Women” exhibit, moved to a virtual event due to COVID-19, features over 60 artists at www.nastywomenmemphis.com in a virtual art exhibition & sale benefiting Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi. The show runs from October 1 until after the presidential election, closing on Friday, November 6, 2020. It serves to demonstrate solidarity among artists who identify with being a “Nasty Woman” in the face of threats to roll back women’s rights, individual rights, and reproductive rights.
