This Just In – It’s Gonna Be Smokin’ Busy On 4/20!

Hey, gang- lots to do this weekend. Here are a few involving the MSCA…

First up is our MSCA SAT-ART-DAY at 901 Comic East out on Macon Road this Saturday from 10am-2pm. We’ll be sketching and working on art projects while talkin’ toons and sharing art techniques. Be sure to bring along a sketchbook, drawing tablet, portfolio, or feel free to use some of our art supplies we’ll have on hand- great opportunity to try different mediums and techniques as well as ask/share art advice. You can also add to our jam piece for the next zine.

The drawing event is free and open to the public, but anyone not old enough to drive themselves to the event needs to have a parent attend with them. Be sure to bring a few bucks if you’d like to enjoy any beverages and/or snacks from 901 Comics’ “The Bar With No Name”.

And while at 901 Comics for only $4.20 you can pick up a copy of the locally produced “Stoned Ninja” comic book by writer Gabriel DeRanzo and artist Greg Cravens.

The first of many pop ups of Rogue’s Gallery at Centerpoint Toys and Games in Millington TN will happen Saturday from 10am to 3pm! Come check out some original art from local artists including our own Katie Jones. You can find it all at 4792 Navy Road.

And from Dale Martin:

Hi there, fellow MSCAers (MSCAns? MSCAians?)!

I’m hoping that your weekend will be a good one, and that we avoid the rain in the forecast. If your weekend isn’t already too packed with fun (like the Sat-ART-Day in Cordova), I invite you to join me on Saturday, 4/20/24 from 10-5 for the post-pandemic return of the East Buntyn Artwalk! I’ll be pitching my tent at 490 Prescott Street as part of this amazing open-air bazaar of artist pop-ups in the front yards and porches of the inviting and walkable east Memphis neighborhood, located just to the west of Highland. In the past, this was one of my favorite festivals (both as a customer and as an exhibitor) and I hope this year’s event will be able to recapture that spirit. Come on out; it should be a good time! Admission is FREE, and the event is child and pet friendly.

This is also a good chance to get a feel for what an art festival like this can be like. It’s sort of a low-stress Cooper-Young Fest, but everyone is there to look at and buy artwork, not listen to bands. And it’s an audience that’s generally more engaged with original work than happens at typical comic cons. There’s a similar event in the fall, located in the Vollintine-Evergreen area that I think might be worth staging an MSCA booth where we could gain some visibility, sell some comics and art, and hang out together. If you’re intrigued by this idea, come on out to 490 Prescott, and we can chat a bit. Or at the next MSCA meetup, whichever…

Rain date (fingers crossed we won’t need it) is Sunday, 4/21. Questions? Check out my blog, the Artwalk website, or just hit reply. Hope to see you there,
dale.
