Memphis Monster Con Memories

This last weekend was the first ever Memphis Monster Con. It was held at the Pipkin Building at the fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday. Memphis has never has a horror con before, so this was the first of its kind in the M-town.

The show was put on by 901 Comics. That’s show organizer Jaime Wright opening up the Pipkin Building, and that’s his partner Shannon Merritt getting his game face on.

I was tabling in Artists Alley the whole weekend with my new table set-up. I had ordered a new canopy and table runners, and bought some LED lights, a new con bag and had some new displays. Also had some new hand drawn sketchcards and other merch for sale.

My first sale of the weekend was to Marty Rosson from Gabe’s Cave Comis, Cards & Games. He bought one of my sketchcovers to add to a charity auction they are doing. He owns several of my sketchcovers.

I had an endcap space and saw a lot of familiar faces, including fellow Mid-South Cartoonists Association members, and friends of the MSCA.

Speaking of the MSCA, on the row across from me Greg Cravens had his “Con Cards” traveling sideshow booth, Gabe and Ben Daranzo and Eric McMeans were set up at the “Stoned Ninja” and “Raptor Boy” table, and Lee Raggs had her table at the end of their row.

Lee had actor guest John Philbin stop by her table.

Greg was drawing caricatures (and some SCAREricatures!) and selling/playing Con Cards with folks that stopped by at his table.

When they weren’t coming by he decided to take his show on the road and walked the con. Lee met a new friend at the reptile booth across from her table..!

And Greg met a friendly Dogpool walking the con floor.

Artists Katie Jones (Daughters Of Dorkness/Rogues Gallery) and Shawn Howe were on the row behind Lee, Greg, Gabe and Ben.

Matt Bowers, creator of the “Memphis” comic series was not too far away from me in Artists Alley.

Ryan Ladner/Thrill Comics was near Shawn and Katie promoting his comic series “Memphis VS Zombies“. Ryan runs Geek Night Trivia every Thursday night at 901 Comics East. There were a lot of other artists in attendance like Cameron Holland, who did the official con art print and had several of his paintings for sale.

For artist Elizabeth McKinney (top right) it was her first con appearance, but looked all pro from the get go!

Lots of great costumes- including Michael Myers, Scarecrow, and “Minimum Overdrive“.

Local artist Andrew Chandler and writer/voice actor Chris Jowers walked the con floor as dead Elvis and Frank Sinatra.

The Vegas duo made sure to stop by Ryan’s “Memphis VS Zombies” table.

There were lots of great vendors set up- everything from collectible toys and props, to movies, tees, and more.

DeSoto County Ghostbuster Cory Coffman had his booth “Cabin13” which was full of horror items, and of course Eric Crimmins had to check it out.

Eric and his wife Sandra Crimmins were set up with tons of horror merch at their Eric’s Secret Stash booth. I did some trading with Eric. Derrick Patterson stopped by their booth to say hi.

He stopped by my booth as well. MSCA prez and fellow Memphis Ghostbuster Kevin L. Williams was there to present a panel on the paranormal.

And our fiends– uh, “friends” from the Beale Street Monster Club were on hand, too.

I had a great time and was happy to be back in artists alley at a con. Hope you got a chance to check out this one!
